Brazilian filmmaker José Eduardo Belmonte is poised to embark on a compelling narrative journey with his upcoming film, *Em Suas Mãos* (In Your Hands). This project marks a notable reunion with actor Rodrigo Lombardi, following their successful collaboration on the award-winning series *Carcereiros* (Jailers). Their previous partnership bore fruit as *Carcereiros* received the prestigious Grand Jury Award at the MIPDrama event in 2017—an acknowledgment of compelling storytelling and strong performances. Now, the duo aims to delve into complex themes of revenge and justice within the immigrant experience in New York.
The backdrop for *Em Suas Mãos* is particularly poignant. Belmonte reflects on the turbulent social climate of 2018, a year marked by polarization and animosity, which sparked his creative interest in exploring revenge as a narrative device. In the throes of the pandemic, Belmonte partnered with Fábio Andrade, an experienced screenwriter and adjunct professor at Columbia University, to craft a script that not only encapsulates the struggles of Brazilian immigrants but also reflects on the broader societal fractures that have emerged. “During those times, faith in institutions wavered, providing fertile ground for a story that examines the moral complexities surrounding retribution,” Belmonte remarked.
