Horizon: An American Saga, the ambitious Civil War epic from Kevin Costner, was set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 23. The film, which had its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, was not well received by audiences, with a disappointing gross of just over $34 million. Warner Bros initially planned to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16, but the sequel’s release has been delayed indefinitely. The hope is to give audiences who have not yet seen Chapter 1 a chance to catch up before the release of the sequel.
Horizon: An American Saga follows in the tradition of Warner Bros’ iconic Westerns, delving into the allure of the Old West and the struggles faced during the Civil War. Spanning from 1861 to 1865, the film takes viewers on a journey through a country torn apart by war, highlighting the experiences of families, friends, and foes as they navigate through a time of great uncertainty.
Kevin Costner has described Horizon as a four-part project, with production on Chapter 3 already underway. In addition to co-writing and directing the films, Costner is part of an ensemble cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, and many more. Costner collaborated on the script with Jon Baird, from a story conceived with Mark Kasdan. He also served as a producer alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard.
Despite the setbacks with the release of Chapter 2, the future of Horizon: An American Saga remains uncertain. The delay in the sequel’s release raises questions about the reception and overall success of the film. Will audiences be drawn to the continuation of the saga, or has the lackluster performance of the first installment dampened enthusiasm for the project?
Horizon: An American Saga is a bold and ambitious undertaking that explores a pivotal moment in American history. While the first chapter may have fallen short of expectations, the potential for the series to captivate viewers and portray the complexities of the Civil War era is still present. Only time will tell if Horizon will rise above its initial missteps and secure its place as a memorable and impactful cinematic experience.
