The University of Oklahoma is taking a bold step in revitalizing its struggling football program by hiring Ben Arbuckle as its new offensive coordinator and playcaller. Announced this past Monday, the three-year deal marks an ambitious pivot by the school as it aims to increase its competitiveness within the SEC. Arbuckle was previously an integral part of the coaching team at Washington State, where he showcased his ability to develop an explosive offense that finished impressively in national rankings.
Oklahoma’s offense has been underwhelming in its first season in the SEC, notably ranking 15th out of 16 teams in scoring and total offense. This disappointing statistic highlights the need for a fresh tactical approach. Arbuckle succeeds former coordinator Seth Littrell, who departed following a lackluster 2-6 SEC season and a 6-6 overall record. With the infusion of Arbuckle’s youth and creativity—he’s only 29 years old—there’s optimism within the program that he will bring a new dimension to the team’s offensive capabilities.
Arbuckle’s previous roles reveal a promising trajectory marked by significant achievements. At Washington State, he contributed to a dynamic offense that achieved a ranking of 12th nationally in scoring. His leadership was pivotal in the development of standout quarterback John Mateer, who threw for over 3,100 yards and secured 29 touchdowns in his sophomore season. Moreover, Arbuckle’s influence helped Cam Ward, the 2022 quarterback, to lead the nation in passing yards with a staggering 3,735 yards and also recorded 29 touchdowns, solidifying Arbuckle’s reputation as a talented developer of QB talent.
Prior to his stint at Washington State, Arbuckle honed his skills at Western Kentucky, where he served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. His experience there saw quarterback Austin Reed rise to national prominence, underscoring Arbuckle’s capacity to adapt and innovate offensively.
A distinguishing feature of Arbuckle’s coaching philosophy is his adaptability to his players’ strengths, which he articulated in a recent statement. He underscored the principle that “the personnel drives the scheme,” suggesting a versatility in offensive strategy that does not rigidly adhere to one system. Whether it’s a pass-heavy approach or a commitment to establishing a dominant run game, Arbuckle’s focus on tailoring the offense according to his players will be critical for Oklahoma in a competitive SEC landscape.
His diverse background, influenced by various offensive philosophies—including the Air Raid, West Coast, and Pro Style—affords him a broad toolkit from which to devise game plans. This versatility may well be the key ingredient Oklahoma desperately needs to regain its footing in a tougher conference.
For head coach Brent Venables, the hiring of Arbuckle is a strategic and crucial move. With a record of 22-16 over three seasons, he must deliver results soon to bolster the program’s reputation and performance. Transitioning to a coordinator with innovative ideas and a fresh perspective on offense could be the catalyst necessary for a turnaround. The pressures of the SEC require teams to adapt quickly, and Arbuckle’s track record of success and growth in previous roles presents a promising outlook for Oklahoma’s football future.
