Lionsgate acquires the musical comedy Power Ballad starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas

Lionsgate has recently acquired the John Carney directed musical comedy called Power Ballad. This film stars popular actors Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas and is slated for release in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The initial information about this acquisition was shared by Deadline during the Cannes event where the film was in production in Dublin.

Power Ballad revolves around a story of a talented but past-his-prime wedding singer played by Rudd, who teams up with a young rockstar portrayed by Jonas. The rockstar utilizes the wedding singer’s songwriting skills to revitalize his own music career. The intriguing storyline has caught the attention of many fans of John Carney’s work.

Director’s Statement

John Carney, the director of Power Ballad, expressed his excitement about the film finding its rightful home with Lionsgate. He mentioned that the film held a special place in his heart for a long time. Carney, along with Peter McDonald, has written the screenplay for the movie. Carney believes that musically-themed films are best enjoyed in a cinema setting, surrounded by strangers who become temporary friends during the screening.

The film is being produced by Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron through their Likely Story banner, in collaboration with Robert Walpole, Rebecca O’Flanagan for Treasure Entertainment, and John Carney. This team had previously worked on Carney’s other film, Flora and Son, which was acquired by Apple TV+ for a substantial sum.

The production of Power Ballad was supported by 30WEST and Screen Ireland, along with some Executive Producers. Charlotte Koh and Lauren Bixby negotiated the acquisition on behalf of Lionsgate, with Kaycee Holcomb overseeing the Business Affairs aspects. The domestic sales for the film were represented by 30WEST, WME Independent, and UTA Independent Film Group, while WME Independent managed the international rights. Paul Rudd’s representation is managed by Lighthouse Management & Media, UTA, and Jackoway Austen.

This acquisition marks another significant addition to Lionsgate’s movie portfolio, showcasing their commitment to bringing unique and entertaining films to audiences worldwide. Power Ballad seems poised to captivate viewers with its blend of music, comedy, and talented performances from Rudd and Jonas.
