Delonte West, a former NBA guard who played for several teams including the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Mavericks, has found himself in trouble once again. West was arrested and jailed in Virginia early Thursday morning on misdemeanor charges of violating the conditions of his release and resisting arrest. This is not the first time West has faced legal troubles, as he has battled issues with substance abuse in recent years.
According to local authorities in Fairfax County, police spotted West around 1 a.m. in Groveton, Virginia, and attempted to serve a warrant. A pursuit ensued, and officers found him unresponsive after losing sight of him during the chase. Narcan, a medication used to treat narcotic overdoses in emergencies, was administered to West and did not have the desired effect initially. He was then taken to a local hospital, where Narcan worked after being administered a second time. After being released from the hospital, West was transported to the Fairfax County Detention Center, where he is currently being held on a $2,000 bond.
Struggles with Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Throughout his NBA career, West publicly discussed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder. His struggles with mental health and substance abuse have been well-documented, and he sought treatment at a Florida drug rehabilitation therapy center in 2021. After receiving help from former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, West was able to get his life back on track and even started working at the facility where he received treatment.
Mark Cuban was just one of several people in the NBA who tried to help Delonte West during his difficult times. Cuban famously picked West up at a gas station in September 2020 after photos circulated of West panhandling at an intersection in Dallas. The NBA community rallied around West, showing support and offering assistance to try to help him overcome his struggles.
Despite his NBA career coming to an end in 2012, Delonte West continues to face challenges in his personal life. His recent arrest and jail time in Virginia highlight the ongoing battle he faces with mental health and substance abuse issues. As he navigates this difficult time, one can only hope that West receives the help and support he needs to overcome these challenges and move forward towards a healthier and more stable future.
