Amid warnings of potential far-right marches in the UK, counter-protesters have taken to the streets of various cities including Bristol, London, Liverpool, Birmingham, and Brighton. Despite fears of potential violence and clashes, more than 6,000 specialist police officers were mobilised to maintain order. Some businesses chose to close early, while others opted to board up their windows in anticipation of the protests.
As the evening progressed, it became apparent that the anticipated mass far-right protests had not materialized. Instead, it was the counter-demonstrators who took the initiative and dominated the scenes in cities like Birmingham, where hundreds of anti-racism protesters gathered outside a migrant center. The crowd, carrying signs with messages like “no place for hate” and “bigots out of Brum”, later marched through the city without any presence of far-right groups.
In Bristol, several thousand people gathered in a calm and relaxed atmosphere, with some individuals even playing music. Despite shops and businesses boarding up their premises in anticipation of trouble, the far-right groups were nowhere to be seen, and the police maintained a low-profile on the fringes of the crowd. Sky correspondent Dan Whitehead described the scene as Bristol’s message of unity and tolerance.
In Walthamstow, east London, a large crowd flooded the high street with signs reading “love migrants, hate racism” and “stop the right”. Similar scenes unfolded in Liverpool, with hundreds standing guard outside a day center for asylum seekers. Chants of “migrants are welcome” and “fascists out” filled the air as people demonstrated their solidarity with marginalized communities.
While most cities experienced peaceful counter-protests, reports of “small pockets” of far-right protesters surfaced in places like Portsmouth, Brighton, and Blackpool. However, fears of widespread violence were largely unfounded as the night progressed. The prime minister and police had issued warnings against troublemakers, and several individuals have already faced legal consequences for their involvement in the disorder.
The events of the past week serve as a reminder of the importance of unity, tolerance, and standing up against hate and bigotry. While the threat of far-right extremism continues to loom, the resilience and determination of counter-protesters have shown that the values of love and solidarity can prevail in the face of division and discord. As communities come together to reject violence and discrimination, it is essential for authorities to address the root causes of intolerance and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
