Qualcomm is set to make a big announcement at the Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin (Berlin International Radio Exhibition) 2024 event, where they will unveil a new variant of the Snapdragon X series chipset. The new chipset, known as Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100, is designed to power the next generation of AI PCs, also called Copilot+ PCs. This new processor is expected to deliver an impressive 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS) performance.
Unlike previous models in the series, the new Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 chipset will boast eight cores, as opposed to the 10 or 12 cores found in earlier variants. It is reported to have a maximum clock speed of 3.4GHz. However, one downside of this new chipset is that it is expected to offer slightly weaker GPU benchmark scores compared to its predecessors.
Leading brands like Lenovo, Asus, and Acer have already started listing new laptop models that will feature the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 chipset. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 is rumored to be the first laptop to come equipped with this processor. This laptop was recently spotted on the Amazon Germany website and features a 14-inch WUXGA OLED display, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD storage, and a 57Wh battery.
It is expected that these new AI-enabled laptops powered by the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 chipset will hit the market in the final quarter of the year. Some of these devices may be officially unveiled at the IFA 2024 event. However, it is important to note that Qualcomm has not yet made an official announcement regarding the release of this new variant.
While Qualcomm is making strides in the AI PC market with its latest chipset, Intel is not far behind. Intel is gearing up to launch its Lunar Lake chipset, which is said to offer up to 67 TOPS of performance. This intense competition between Qualcomm and Intel highlights the growing demand for high-performance processors in the PC industry.
In a recent interview, Mike Roberts, Vice President & Global Head, Product, Partner and Technology Marketing at Qualcomm, emphasized the company’s focus on performance per watt. He highlighted the importance of balancing performance with battery life in mobile devices. Roberts stated, “Performance is great, but if my battery life stinks, nobody’s going to want to use it. And to me, that’s core to who we are being a mobile company.”
Overall, the upcoming launch of the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 chipset is a significant step forward for Qualcomm in the AI PC market. With powerful performance capabilities and strategic partnerships with top brands, Qualcomm is poised to make a major impact with its latest chipset offering.
