Lucy Connolly, a childminder from Northampton, pleaded guilty to publishing written material to stir up racial hatred in the wake of the Southport stabbings. The post she made on her X account called for “mass deportation” of asylum seekers and suggested setting fire to hotels where they resided. These remarks were made on the day of the knife attack in Southport, Merseyside, which resulted in the death of three young girls and injuries to several other children and adults.
After facing backlash for her actions, Connolly later apologized, claiming that she was acting on “false and malicious” information that was circulating online. Her husband, Conservative West Northamptonshire councillor Raymond Connolly, came to her defense, stating that she was a loving wife and mother who had been misled by misinformation. He attributed her actions to the trauma she experienced following the death of their son, Harry, due to medical negligence in 2012. Raymond Connolly expressed relief that the ordeal was over and hoped that his wife would learn from this experience and move forward.

This led to criticism from the judge, who issued a parental summons for the mother to appear in court during her son’s sentencing.
