Artificial intelligence (AI) has long been met with skepticism when it comes to its storytelling and filmmaking abilities. However, a new study has shed light on its potential in the field of science, particularly in predicting the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The research, conducted by a team from the University of Cambridge in the UK, utilized a machine learning approach to train AI algorithms on cognitive ability tests and brain scans from 410 individuals. By identifying patterns that correlated cognition with levels of gray matter in the brain, the AI was able to predict the progression of Alzheimer’s disease with remarkable accuracy. Senior author Zoe Kourtzi, a cognitive computational neuroscientist, emphasized the sensitivity of the AI in predicting the advancement of the disease.
When tested on 1,486 cases outside of the training data, the AI demonstrated an impressive ability to correctly identify individuals who would develop Alzheimer’s within three years with an accuracy rate of 82 percent. This performance far surpassed the accuracy of current clinical assessments by about three times. Not only could the AI predict the onset of Alzheimer’s, but it could also estimate the rate of progression of the disease, aiding in early intervention and treatment decisions.
