Pedro Almodóvar, the renowned Spanish director, is set to premiere his first English-language feature, The Room Next Door, at the 62nd New York Film Festival. The film, adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through, will make its U.S. debut at Alice Tully Hall on Oct. 4. This drama stars Julianne Moore as Ingrid, a best-selling writer who reconnects with her friend Martha, a war journalist played by Tilda Swinton. The story delves into their pasts and the challenges they face.

With The Room Next Door, Almodóvar explores a new frontier in his career, moving away from his traditional Spanish setting to American soil, specifically Manhattan and upstate New York. This shift in focus allows him to showcase his long-standing fascination with female characters in a fresh and captivating way. The inclusion of talented actors like John Turturro, Alessandro Nivola, and Juan Diego Botto adds further depth to the narrative.

Almodóvar expressed his deep connection to the New York Film Festival, referring to it as his “bridge to New York audiences for decades.” Shooting a scene in the movie at Alice Tully Hall held special significance for the director, as it brought back cherished memories and hinted at future collaborations. The festival’s Artistic Director, Dennis Lim, praised The Room Next Door as a poignant and beautifully crafted film that resonates with the current cultural moment.

Having participated in the NYFF with 15 selections since 1988, Almodóvar has established himself as a mainstay at the prestigious event. His diverse filmography, spanning from Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown to Pain and Glory, showcases his versatility and artistic growth over the years. The Room Next Door marks another milestone in his illustrious career, setting the stage for a new chapter in his filmmaking journey.

The Room Next Door is slated to have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival before heading to NYFF. Sony Pictures Classics, a frequent collaborator with Almodóvar, secured the domestic rights to the film earlier this year, ensuring a wide audience for this anticipated release. As NYFF approaches, anticipation is high for Almodóvar’s latest creation, promising audiences a compelling and visually stunning cinematic experience.

Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door represents a bold step in his career, merging his distinctive storytelling style with a new American backdrop. With a stellar cast and a narrative that explores complex themes of friendship and identity, the film is poised to captivate audiences at both Venice and NYFF. As one of the most acclaimed directors of our time, Almodóvar continues to push creative boundaries and deliver engaging and emotionally resonant cinema.
