Boeing recently secured orders for a minimum of 40 wide-body jetliners from Korean Air, which includes the new 777X jetliner. This announcement was made at the Farnborough Airshow, showcasing Korean Air’s vote of confidence in the struggling manufacturer. The order consists of 20 777X planes and 20 787-10 Dreamliner planes, adding to Boeing’s commercial jet lineup. Korean Air also has the option to expand its order with 10 more Dreamliners, representing a significant move in the aviation industry.
Korean Air CEO Walter Cho expressed his optimism regarding the delivery of these new planes, stating that they expect to start receiving them later in the decade. The delay in the twin-engine 777X’s production schedule has been a concern, but with the recent commencement of certification flight tests with the Federal Aviation Administration, progress is being made. This order signifies a vote of confidence in Boeing’s ability to overcome their current challenges and deliver on their promises.
Boeing’s customers have been facing delays in aircraft deliveries, attributed to post-Covid supply chain disruptions affecting the aerospace industry. In addition to these challenges, issues related to safety concerns and manufacturing flaws have emerged, such as the door plug blow out incident earlier this year on the 737 Max planes. However, despite these setbacks, Korean Air’s decision to place an order with Boeing reflects their confidence in the manufacturer’s ability to overcome these obstacles and deliver high-quality aircraft.
It is worth noting that Korean Air had also ordered competing Airbus A350-1000 aircraft earlier in the year, adding another layer of complexity to their fleet expansion plans. The airline’s CEO, Walter Cho, mentioned that the first aircraft delivered among the Boeing 777X and Airbus A350-1000 will become their flagship, emphasizing the importance of timeliness and reliability in the aviation industry. This competition between Boeing and Airbus highlights the dynamic nature of the market and the importance of delivering on customer expectations.
Boeing’s success in securing orders from Korean Air at the Farnborough Airshow demonstrates the continued demand for wide-body jetliners in the aviation industry. Despite the challenges faced by Boeing in recent years, the vote of confidence from Korean Air signals a positive outlook for the manufacturer’s future. This order not only represents a significant milestone for Boeing but also showcases Korean Air’s commitment to expanding their fleet with industry-leading aircraft.
