Nicole Kidman recently celebrated 25 years since the release of the iconic film Eyes Wide Shut, reflecting on her experience working on the movie with her then-husband, Tom Cruise. The Academy Award winner shared how she, Cruise, and renowned writer/director Stanley Kubrick spent weeks rehearsing an intimate scene in their bedroom. Kidman revealed that they spent six to eight weeks at Kubrick’s home before even stepping foot on the sets at Pinewood Studios. This extended rehearsal period allowed them to become comfortable with each other and explore ideas for the scenes.
During her time working on Eyes Wide Shut, Kidman believes that Kubrick drew inspiration from her marriage with Cruise. She shared how the director was interested in their relationship dynamics and often asked them questions to understand their connection better. Kubrick’s focus on the complexities of relationships, particularly triangles, added depth to the scenes involving Kidman, Cruise, and their on-screen interactions. Despite the potential for one person to feel ganged up on in such situations, Kidman clarified that she never felt that way during the filming process.
Kidman also touched upon Kubrick’s different relationships with her and Cruise. While she had a close working relationship with Kubrick, Cruise worked more closely with the director on developing his character. This unique dynamic allowed for a nuanced portrayal of their characters and interactions in the film. Kidman credited Kubrick’s understanding of relationship dynamics, particularly regarding triangles, as essential in managing the complex dynamics between the characters in Eyes Wide Shut.
In a previous interview, Kidman expressed her gratitude for the experience of working on Eyes Wide Shut. Despite the lengthy shoot and demanding schedule, Kidman adopted a “slightly zen approach to things,” focusing on being present and dedicated to the filming process. She mentioned that having her children on set and being married to Cruise during that time allowed her to remain grounded and fully committed to the project. Kidman’s reflective attitude towards the film showcases her dedication to her craft and the collaborative efforts that went into creating a memorable piece of cinema.
