The study involved 112 students who were invited to watch a video and then test some candies. Half of the students watched a video featuring men and women engaged in sports, while the other half watched a video without any physical activity. After watching the videos, the students were given a cup of candy and asked to judge its quality for three minutes. Surprisingly, the students who watched the sports video ended up consuming more candy than those who watched the non-active video.

An interesting finding from the study was that male students indulged in significantly more candy than female students after watching the sports video. This raised questions about whether the results were influenced by the consumption patterns of males versus females. Further analysis was conducted to explore the impact of the type of sport watched on candy intake.

The study also examined how the difficulty level of the sport shown in the video affected candy consumption. Female students were invited to watch videos depicting either easy-to-perform sports (such as light running) or difficult sports (such as athletics long jump, gymnastics, baseball, rugby, or rock climbing). The results showed that students who watched the easy sports video consumed significantly more candy than those who watched the difficult sports video. This highlights the fact that the ease or difficulty of the exercise shown plays a crucial role in influencing food intake.

To explain these findings, researchers looked at goal motivation theory. People tend to push harder when they feel they are not meeting a goal, but once progress is perceived, motivation can decrease. After completing a workout, individuals may feel a sense of accomplishment and slack off on their efforts. This can lead to a drop in motivation to pursue related goals, such as healthy eating. Achieving smaller goals, like exercising, may make people feel they deserve a break, leading to indulging more in food.

The study suggests that merely watching sports can give a sense of vicarious fulfillment of fitness goals. When individuals envision themselves performing the activity they are watching, they may feel as though they have already exercised, leading to more-indulgent food choices. Women, in particular, are more susceptible to this phenomenon due to their heightened concern about weight and dieting goals. This knowledge can be valuable for policymakers and marketers promoting healthy lifestyles to avoid inadvertently encouraging increased consumption.

For individuals aiming to maintain healthy eating habits, it is crucial to be mindful of how watching sports can impact eating behaviors. Choosing to watch more challenging sports may help resist the temptation to indulge excessively.
