Amazon Labor Union Votes to Affiliate with International Brotherhood of Teamsters

In a groundbreaking move, members of the Amazon Labor Union have made the decision to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. This marks the first time that a group of company workers has organized at a U.S. warehouse, demonstrating a shift in the labor landscape at Amazon. The joint statement released by both groups revealed that an overwhelming 98% of ALU members voted in favor of joining up with the Teamsters, showcasing strong unity and solidarity among the workforce.

The ALU, a union based in New York, has been facing challenges in negotiating with Amazon for fair working conditions and job security. Despite gaining national attention after a historic victory at one of Amazon’s warehouses in Staten Island, known as the JFK8 facility, the group has struggled to reach a contract agreement with the company. The rifts that formed between some members and ALU president Chris Smalls further complicated the negotiation process.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the U.S., has been a long-time advocate for organizing Amazon delivery and warehouse workers. The creation of an Amazon division in 2021 signaled the union’s commitment to supporting and funding workers in their unionization efforts. With the formation of the local chapter ALU-International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1, the union now has the mandate to organize Amazon warehouse workers across New York’s five boroughs, strengthening its presence in the region.

Both the Teamsters and the ALU have emphasized their dedication to fighting for the rights of Amazon workers. Sean O’Brien, general president of the Teamsters, expressed confidence in the alliance, stating that they will work tirelessly to ensure that workers secure good jobs and safe working conditions through a union contract. The upcoming election to determine the ALU’s next leadership will be crucial in shaping the union’s future direction and strategies in negotiations with Amazon.

The decision by ALU members to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters marks a significant milestone in the labor movement within Amazon. It sends a strong message to the company that workers are united in their demands for better working conditions and job security. As the union continues to navigate challenges and seek to establish a fair contract with Amazon, the support and backing of the Teamsters will be instrumental in driving forward the collective efforts of the workforce.
